Goan Musical Instruments

In goa, an assortment of traditional percussion instruments are used during festivals, ceremonies and rituals. Most of them are locally made, while some are on the verge of extinction.

Ghumat is one instruments among them. I shall provide you with a brief introduction about this instrument.

Ghumat
This is an ancient instrument. This instrument is made up of clay. Kumbhar makes this clay pot(कळशी ).In this clay pot there are two holes on both the side. It has a big hole on one side and a small one on the other side. The big hole is tied with the skin of Monitor Lizard. In goa we use the term Ghorpad (घोरपड़ ) or Gaar (गार) for the Monitor Lizard. Now a days the skin of Goat is also used to tie on the bass side. The hole on which the skin is tied it is known as the Bass side. This instrument is played in different programs such as it is used in Folk dances, playing Arti which is famous in goa and many other programs.
