Goan musical instruments

My fifth blog will tell you about the next Goan instrument that is

Kasale

This is a Goan instrument. This instrument is an ancient instrument. This instrument is made up of copper plates. It has a round shape. This instrument is much different from the other instruments like Ghumat, Shamel, Dhol, Taso etc. This instrument is having a treble sound. This instrument sounds like jingles. It is a two piece instrument while some instruments are one piece like Shamel, Ghumat, Taso etc. The sound is produced by hitting both the pieces. The vibrations which are produced by hitting both the pieces produces the perfect sound. For better sound it is being polished so that we can produce good sound. To hold this instrument properly it is tied with the wooden piece.

Taso is similar to Shamel. But the difference in Taso is having as circular shape having cylindrical shape. Taso is an ancient instrument. Taso is made up of copper. earlier taso was made up of a wooden blog. But now a days it is made up of copper.
Goat's skin is used to tie on the Taso to produce sound. Taso is one of the favorite instrument to me. Taso is mainly used in Shigmo, Ghodemodni, Dhangar dance, etc. This instrument is similar to Shamel.
Now a days some people use fiber to tie on Taso. But fiber makes different sounds.

My third blog will tell you about the next instrument that is:-

Shamel

This instrument is one of the known instrument in Goan music. This instrument is made up of trees trunk and also of the middle part of the tree. The upper part of the instrument is having a hole of about 1feet.Some Shamels are of different swaras such as kali 1, kali 2 etc. The skin of Goat is tied on the wooden structure to produce different sounds. The sticks which are used to play shamel is made up of tree known as BETH(बेथ ), usually we say Bethachi badi(बेताची बडी ).  Now a days people use fibre instead of Goats skin and plastic sticks instead of beth. Shamel is basically used in the Arti playing, folk dances, folk music etc. In Goan arti, shamel is the main instrument in all among the three instruments.

Goan Musical Instruments

In goa, an assortment of traditional percussion instruments are used during festivals, ceremonies and rituals. Most of them are locally made, while some are on the verge of extinction.

Ghumat is one instruments among them. I shall provide you with a brief introduction about this instrument.

Ghumat
This is an ancient instrument. This instrument is made up of clay. Kumbhar makes this clay pot(कळशी ).In this clay pot there are two holes on both the side. It has a big hole on one side and a small one on the other side. The big hole is tied with the skin of Monitor Lizard. In goa we use the term Ghorpad (घोरपड़ ) or Gaar (गार) for the Monitor Lizard. Now a days the skin of Goat is also used to tie on the bass side. The hole on which the skin is tied it is known as the Bass side. This instrument is played in different programs such as it is used in Folk dances, playing Arti which is famous in goa and many other programs.
